Projects

Eligibility

The Foundation’s mission is to support historic preservation activities in the Santa Barbara community, including but not limited to the preservation of the Santa Barbara Club’s historic clubhouse.  Based upon the requirements associated with the Foundation’s tax-exempt status, requests for funding for physical improvements to structures ordinarily must demonstrate both enhancement of an historic structure and public access to the area enhanced.  For example, a project restoring the exterior of an historic structure facing a city street demonstrably has public access and passively promotes public education about the city’s history.  At the other end of the spectrum, a project restoring interior rooms of a privately-owned structure that is not regularly opened to the public at large would be unlikely to qualify unless the proposal were accompanied by a plan for regular public access and educational efforts.  Improvements to infrastructure of an historic structure may be considered depending on findings associated with public benefit.  The Foundation also may consider projects that are educational in other ways, such as historical research projects aimed at publication.

The Foundation’s Trustees consider projects on a priority basis, meaning that proposals will be reviewed periodically and funding will be made available to meritorious projects consistent with availability of funds.

Should you wish to propose a project for funding, please provide a written description of the project that addresses the Foundation’s criteria and includes a detailed summary of specifications, costs, and other details as may be available.  All proposals should be directed to President of the Board of Trustees, Santa Barbara Club Preservation Foundation, 1105 Chapala Street, Santa Barbara, California 93101.

Current Project

Santa Barbara Club History Book
The Club’s Board of Directors has requested the Foundation to fund and support the Club project to produce a story of the Club’s history. Since the story of the Club is intertwined with the City’s own development, the goal is to both preserve the history for current and future club members and to make that history available to other interested people and institutions. The Foundation has provided initial seed funding and is now fund-raising for this important project.

Future Projects

The Foundation remains vigilant for Club needs to restore and preserve this national historic place.  Near term needs include repair and re-roofing of the original storage building opposite the kitchen and Remington Room. Follow on projects include restoration of the retaining wall on the Figueroa Street elevation, window repair and sealing throughout the building, and exterior paint as a preservative measure.

Past Project

Kitchen Renovation – Phase 1
The Club’s kitchen is more than a quarter century old and is serious need of renovation. The Club Directors requested that the Foundation support Phase 1 of the kitchen renovation since Phase 1 is almost entirely involved with the exterior of the historic building. The Trustees unanimously voted to commit to funding Phase 1 and are now raising funds for this project.

Restoration of Clubhouse Front Steps and Entry
In early 2016 the Trustees of the Foundation considered a proposal from the Club for restoration of the front steps and foyer of the clubhouse, which was damaged due to age and was in need of repair.  The Trustees found the project consistent with the Foundation’s mission and criteria for funding and funded this project as an immediate priority. This project was completed in 2016.

A Message from John Doordan
Santa Barbara Club Preservation Foundation President

NRHP Plaque.jpg

Thanks to the Club for co-hosting the unveiling of our National Register of Historic Places plaque.  Designation affords us inclusion in the nation's official list of cultural resources worthy of preservation. And thanks to the nearly hundred people who enjoyed a positive energy evening with abundant camaraderie.  Free-flowing wine and hors d'ouevres were the backdrop for a reminder of the Club history book newly underway.  As we approach the year end giving season, the Preservation Foundation reminds us to review the many ways to contribute, including appreciated securities and RMD's.  View Photos from the event.
